Over 12,000 Police, Force Multipliers Deployed to Secure NCR During Holy Week, Summer Travel
MANILA — More than 12,000 police officers and force multipliers have been deployed across Metro Manila to maintain peace and order during the Holy Week observance and the summer vacation period, the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) said.
The security personnel have been strategically positioned in key areas of convergence, including transport terminals, major roadways, churches, and commercial districts, to ensure public safety amid the expected surge in travelers and religious activities.
In a press briefing, NCRPO spokesperson Maj. Hazel Asilo said the deployment also takes into account possible public rallies related to rising oil prices, prompting heightened police visibility and readiness.
To assist commuters and churchgoers, police assistance desks will be established in 135 transport hubs and 329 churches throughout the region.
“These (churches) are some of the areas we will be guarding and we will be deploying 1,153 police personnel,” Asilo said.
Meanwhile, the Philippine National Police–Highway Patrol Group (PNP‑HPG) has been directed to closely coordinate with bus operators and transport companies to help ensure road safety during the peak travel season.
“Our proactive measures include road worthiness inspections in coordination with the LTO (Land Transportation Office) and LTFRB (Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board) and even the readiness of drivers,” PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said in a news release.
Authorities expect millions of Filipinos to travel to their home provinces during the summer break, a trend that historically leads to a higher risk of traffic accidents.
According to data from the United Nations, road crashes claim an average of 32 lives daily in the Philippines, or roughly 11,000 deaths annually, with most victims belonging to the 15‑to‑29 age group.
Police officials said the intensified deployment and coordination with transport agencies are aimed at preventing accidents, maintaining order, and ensuring a safe and peaceful Holy Week and summer season for the public. (PNA)
